An isolated cylindrical void is located inside an incompressible nonlinear-elastic medium whose constitutive behaviour is governed by a neo-Hookean strain energy function. In-plane hydrostatic pressure is applied in the far-field so that the void changes its radius and an inhomogeneous region of deformation arises in the vicinity of the void. We consider scattering from the void in the deformed configuration due to an incident field (of small amplitude) generated by a horizontally polarized shear (SH) line source, a distance r0 (R0) away from the centre of the void in the deformed (undeformed) configuration. We show that the scattering coefficients of this scattered field are unaffected by the pre-stress (initial deformation). In particular, they depend not on the deformed void radius a or distance r0, but instead on the original void size A and original distance R0.

Summary
In 1901 Robert Campbell Moberly (1845–1903), the distinguished Anglican theologian, published a lengthy book on the atonement entitled Atonement and Personality. Buried in the middle of it is a chapter that sketches an interesting analysis of the concept of reason in theology. The vision of reason is nicely sandwiched between an account of human agency and of the capacity to love in a chapter entitled ‘The Holy Spirit in Relation to Human Personality’. This trinity of topics fitted neatly together for Moberly in two distinct ways. First, he insisted that in each case a proper understanding of these concepts begins with our initial and inchoate grasp of these notions and then moves to a richer account engendered by his robust trinitarian theology. Second, the proper functioning of human agency, human reason and the capacity to love are intimately related, so that reason, as applied in theology, depends on proper human self-realization brought about by radical submission to Christ through the Spirit and resulting in an emancipation that brings true love to expression in human relations.
Moberly is operating in a tradition that depicts reason as a faculty. In its initial manifestation the exercise of this ‘rational’ faculty takes the prosaic form of question and answer, comparison, inference and discovery. This is reason operating in the early stage of development. Reason at this level is infantile; using it in this manner is like acquiring the capacity to walk; it is really the ‘grating and creaking of the machinery’ in its initial operations. Thus this cannot be the essence of reason. Reason in its most serious sense is ‘the capacity of personal insight into reality – of all kinds, and most of all whatever is highest and most inclusive as reality’. It is the ‘personal capacity of beholding wisdom and truth’. This vision of reason fits snugly with a hierarchy of truths. ‘Truth of course is manifold and multiform. There are truths of material fact: truths of abstract statement; truths of historical occurrence; truths of moral experience; truths of spiritual existence; and that truth is deepest and truest which most includes and unifies them all.’ It also fits snugly with the clear remnants of an Idealist metaphysics which are peeping through the surface of his thinking.

Summary
Theologians are relatively secure on what counts as relevant topics in ecclesiology; they pursue questions relative to the identity, nature, structures, ministry, sacraments, and mission of the church. It is much less clear what role philosophers should have in this domain. This may arise because the kind of intellectual tools and skills deployed by philosophers simply do not have traction when applied to issues in ecclesiology; the questions that show up in ecclesiology are such that they are not susceptible to philosophical analysis. There is, however, a more likely explanation. Modern philosophy of religion has focused on generic theism. There has not as yet been a systematic exploration of the philosophical dimensions of the whole range of topics that exercises the Christian theologian. This omission may be well and good in philosophy of religion, but it cannot be allowed to stand as the default position in philosophical theology. In the latter instance, the preliminary starting point surely must be that no topic in Christian theology should be off limits to philosophical investigation. Only time can tell whether philosophical reflection on the church can yield the kind of insight that is common, say, on the Trinity or atonement. In this chapter, I focus on conceptual and epistemological dimensions of ecclesiology. I end by sketching the kind of tasks that are likely to detain the philosopher.

Summary
On October 3, 1749, Charles Wesley married Grace Murray to John Bennet. It was a devastating moment for John Wesley. Despite a host of earlier reservations about getting married, he had concluded that Grace Murray was indeed the woman for him. So much so, that he had even entered into various legal commitments to her. However, Charles had intervened and stopped any future developments in its tracks by literally carrying her off and marrying her to Bennet, a rival suitor. John worked through his distress in two ways. He wrote a moving poem that vented his suffering on God. More significantly, he returned to his work as a preacher. Such was Wesley's commitment to preaching, that one can well believe that this brought some relief amid of deep personal grief. As he noted in 1757, “About noon I preached at Woodseats, in the evening at Sheffield. I do indeed live by preaching.” Such is the legacy of preaching in his ministry that much of Methodism even to this day looks upon their ministers first and foremost as preachers. Failure in this arena spells failure overall. The legendary statistics are well known. Wesley rode up to 20,000 miles a year on horseback. He preached 800 sermons a year to crowds as large as 20,000. In a typical day he was up at 4.00 a.m., he preached at 5.00 a.m., and he was on the road to the next assignment at 6.00 a.m. Consider this neat snapshot of his work taken from Wednesday, July 21, 1779.

Summary
We do not naturally turn to Jesus of Nazareth when we go in search of epistemological resources. On the one hand, he is seen canonically in the church in such exalted theological categories that we naturally feel it is demeaning if not insulting to pull him down to the level of our mundane puzzles about the nature of rationality, truth, warrant, justification, and knowledge. On the other hand, our ruminations on epistemic issues have a proper life of their own, with their own carefully developed themes and insights, so that dragging in Jesus of Nazareth initially seems incongruous and artificial. To speak of the epistemology of Jesus is an oxymoron, a category mistake.
No doubt there are additional historical considerations from the Enlightenment onward that confirm and strengthen our discomfort. To appeal to Jesus is simply question-begging if we are looking for a serious account of our central epistemological concepts. Why should we look to Jesus for epistemological insight? Have we not already cooked the books in advance if we appeal to Jesus? Have we not already deployed various epistemic intuitions and assumptions that allow us to bring Jesus into the discussion in the first place? Did not Descartes and Locke teach us once and for all that theological disputes required some kind of independent adjudication if they were to be resolved without recourse to violence? So from the side of philosophy the whole enterprise seems hopelessly doomed before it even begins.
